Recognizing Early Signs of a Heart Attack

May 25, 2026  |  By Dr. Ajay S. Sikarwar

A heart attack is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is blocked. Recognizing the early warning signs can make the difference between life and death. Many people assume a heart attack is always sudden and intense, but frequently, symptoms start slowly with mild pain or discomfort.

Most Common Warning Signs

  • Chest Discomfort: Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or it may go away and come back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain.
  • Discomfort in Other Areas: Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  • Shortness of Breath: This can occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other Signs: Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness are also common indicators.

Are Symptoms Different for Women?

While chest pain is the most common symptom for both men and women, women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you suspect you or someone else is having a heart attack, do not wait. **Call emergency services immediately.** Early intervention with treatments like Angioplasty can clear the blockage, restore blood flow, and save heart muscle.
