Managing High Blood Pressure Effectively

May 25, 2026  |  By Dr. Ajay S. Sikarwar

High blood pressure (hypertension) is often called the "silent killer" because it typically has no symptoms until it has caused significant damage to your heart and arteries. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Why is Blood Pressure Management Crucial?

When your blood pressure stays high over time, it causes the heart to pump harder and work overtime, possibly leading to an enlarged heart muscle or heart failure. It also damages the delicate inner lining of the blood vessels.

Actionable Tips to Lower Your Blood Pressure

  • Reduce Sodium Intake: Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can improve your heart health and reduce blood pressure. Avoid processed foods and added salts.
  • Exercise Regularly: 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (like brisk walking) can lower blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mm Hg.
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Losing just a few pounds can make a significant difference.
  • Manage Stress: Chronic stress may contribute to high blood pressure. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.
  • Limit Alcohol & Quit Smoking: Both alcohol and tobacco use can dramatically spike your blood pressure and damage blood vessel walls.

When to See a Cardiologist

If lifestyle changes are not enough to bring your blood pressure down to a healthy range (usually under 130/80 mm Hg), medication may be required. A cardiologist can tailor a specific treatment plan for you.
